Spray Foam Advantages
Foam roofing has many advantages over traditional roofing methods:
Seamless :
Polyurethane foam is applied as a liquid, creating a single monolithic membrane that covers the entire roof. There are no seams or joints, the source of the majority of leaks in traditional roofs.
Multi-Use :
Roofing, walls, refrigerators, freezers, and tanks can be insulated by SPF. It is also currently used in the wine industry, oil industry, and chemical process plants.
Flexibility :
The foam can be sprayed onto virtually any surface, irregularly shaped roofs and protrusions are easily taken care of.
Lightweight :
Foam roofing typically weighs around 50 lbs. per square (10'x10') which is less than a lb per square foot, versus 800 lbs. for a built-up roof and 100 lbs. for ballasted single-ply roofs.
Self-Flashing :
The stickiness of SPF roofing allows it to be installed with almost no flashings; some roofers call the material “self-flashing”. Regardless of age, or building use, SPF materials retain their density and compressive strength. SPF flashings do remarkably well when attached to well-secured existing perimeter metal, panels, and brick. SPF flashings were found applied to virtually every type of membrane roofing system available, including asphalt, coal tar, modified bitumen, and single-ply, in addition to metal panels. SPF curb flashings solve a number of problems, including withstanding structural vibrations when applied to light-gauge metal roof curbs.
Energy Performance and Thermal Insulation :
Energy prices have escalated enormously in the recent years. Now, more than ever, people want the energy savings SPF offers. It has the best insulating properties available for commercial and residential construction today. Both are realizing dramatic savings on their energy bills.
- Sustainability: Foamed roofs require a minimum of upkeep, and have an indefinite lifespan.
- Sprayed polyurethane foam has an R-value of 7.14 per 1 inch thickness, providing more thermal resistance with less material than any other type of roofing insulation.
- Foam roofing produces energy savings of 30% or greater when compared to the alternative roofing systems. The cost of the roof can be easily recovered in less than 5 years.
- The reflectivity values of coatings are known, coatings (unlike gravel) are eligible to receive an Energy Star label
- Roofing foam accommodates thermal expansion and contraction to which it is adhered.
SPF's Waterproofing :
Sprayed Polyurethane Foam is perfect for waterproofing applications. Because it is composed of billions of closed cells, the foam acts as an air barrier, preventing moisture infiltration into the building. This ability minimizes water condensation inside of the structure which is the number one cause of building deterioration. Even when the top coat of a foam roofing system is damaged, the underlying foam will keep the roof from leaking. When a foam roof gets minor damage, repairing the roof can be done with a caulking gun. Polyurethane Foam roofing can sometimes develop blisters. The majority of blisters do not pose a threat to the integrity of the foam roofing system. If a penetration does occur all the way through the foam layers, the water infiltration is isolated only to the area where the membrane has been penetrated. Small penetrations in foam roofng systems can be repaired easily with an elastomeric caulk.
- Water ponding can be a problem with conventional roofing systems, but polyurethane foam in re-roofing situations builds up areas of greater thickness so that water drains properly. This eliminates the problem of the additional weight load associated with water accumulation.
- The thickness at which it is applied can create a slope to improve drainage in flat roofs.
Re-Roof :
For re-roof jobs, SPF can be installed over most anything without tearing off the existing roofing. On retrofit roofs, foam is a fix-all. Old beat up roofs look new again. There’s no need for tear-off, which reduces the amount of time for installation, and any disruption of business or residential activities. Because it clings powerfully to built-up roofs, wood, lumber, plywood, modified bitumen, OSB, concrete, clay tile, asphalt, shingles, and metal roofing, it usually doesn’t require any metal flashing at transitions or terminations, and conforms almost any configuration.
Wind Shear :
SPF roofing contributes to cooler attics and is better able to resist high winds. Homeowners and businesses can take advantage of its far superior resistance to shear in wind-prone areas.
Fire Safety Requirement Advantage:
The foam and coating passes applicable code requirements for exterior and interior fire exposure. The system is rated Class A by ASTM E-108.
Durable:
SPF roofing systems are completely sustainable. Unlike traditional roofing systems which have a definitive life expectancy, an SPF roofing system that is properly maintained can have in indefinite life. Most SPF roofing systems warranties can be renewed for a nominal fee.
Cost Effective
Typical residential installation of roofs over over 2000 square feet or over of one-inch-thick SPF roofing costs between $3.50 and $4.00 a square foot. If tear-off is needed, gravel removal, or HVAC mechanicals need to be elevated the cost will be more. When you perform life cycle cost analysis on competitive roof systems, remember that you must include the cost of tear off and disposal. Compare this number to the SPF roofing, less applicable tax rebates/credits for your area, less projected cost savings from lowered energy consumption.
